Session on "Weak Bones - Causes, Symptoms, Prevention, and Management"

On October 23, 2024, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow, hosted an informative session on bone health. The guest of the session was Dr. Sanjay Srivastava (Senior Consultant and Orthopedic Surgeon). The session was well organized by the Office of Student Affairs under the guidance of Dr. Rashmi Chaudhary (Dean: Student Affairs). It was well coordinated by Student Development Council 2024.

 

The session commenced with welcoming of the guest, who was warmly welcomed with a Green Certificate by Ms. Komal Pandey (Office of Student Affairs) as a token of appreciation for his valuable presence.

 

Dr. Sanjay Srivastava started his address by sharing crucial insights into understanding and managing bone health at different life stages.

 

He further explained the natural progression of bone development, noting that while humans are born with 270 bones, this number fuses to 206 by adulthood. He also shared a sobering statistic that, after the age of 50, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men experience bone weakening. The session further delved into key aspects, such as the structure and characteristics of bones, and the differences that can affect bone strength.

He also spoke about bone health and highlighted the importance of preventive care for maintaining strong bones. He discussed common causes and symptoms of weak bones, emphasizing the DEXA test for bone density assessment. Key nutritional elements, including proteins, calcium, Vitamin D, and Vitamin K2, were identified as essential for bone strength.

 

The session moved further with Dr. Srivastava recommending a 10-week Vitamin D regimen to aid calcium absorption and stressed the value of an active lifestyle with stress-reducing practices like yoga and meditation. He also advised a balanced diet rich in calcium and green vegetables while avoiding high-salt foods, fast food, soft drinks, smoking, alcohol, and excessive coffee. He also underscored the importance of sun exposure and regular exercise as vital for bone health.

 

Dr. Srivastava concluded his address by advocating a holistic approach to health, stressing the importance of keeping the body active and the mind calm for lasting bone strength. His insights provided the audience with practical steps and preventive measures to build and maintain strong, healthy bones, ensuring a more active, vibrant lifestyle.

 

The session concluded with a memento presented to the guest by Ms. Komal Pandey in appreciation of his insights. Participants gained valuable knowledge on the importance of bone health and practical steps to preserve it, making the session an enriching experience for all.
