Wisdom From Alumni – Operations Session

On 26th August 2026, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Lucknow hosted a Wisdom From Alumni session featuring Mr. Hari Om, an alumnus of the 2021–23 batch and currently working as a Project Manager at HCL. The session was organised by the Alumni Relations Committee (ARC) and provided students with practical insights into Operations and Project Management.

The session was graced by Mr. Anupam Saxena, Area Chair – Operations; Ms. Rashmi, Dean – Student Affairs; and Mr. Ashutosh Srivastava, Chairperson – Placement & Corporate Relations, whose presence added further value to the interaction.

Mr. Hari Om explained that Operations is involved in almost every activity, as every task consists of multiple processes that work together to deliver the required output. He highlighted that operations covers both goods management and service management, using simple real-life examples to help students understand the concept.

The session focused on Project Management, particularly in service-based organisations such as HCL. Mr. Hari Om explained how project management connects the client and service provider while managing key constraints such as resources, time, and scope. He also explained the distinction between Project, Program, and Portfolio Management and discussed tools such as MS Project, Power BI, and Jira.

Students were introduced to important operational concepts such as Root Cause Analysis, User Acceptance Testing, Lean Six Sigma, and Operations Analytics. He also discussed career opportunities and certifications such as CAPM, PMP, PRINCE2, and Lean Six Sigma, along with roles ranging from Project Coordinator and Consultant to Project and Program Manager.

A key takeaway from the session was the importance of building strong fundamentals in Excel and SQL before investing in expensive professional tools. Mr. Hari Om also discussed the growing role of AI in the workplace, emphasising that while AI may change how work is performed, it will not completely replace human involvement.

The session provided students with valuable practical exposure to the Operations domain and encouraged them to understand processes, improve efficiency, and develop skills that can be applied across different industries. The interaction concluded with an emphasis on continuous learning, process improvement, and adaptability in the evolving professional environment.
